How do I attract a greater variety of birds to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Bird Suet Feeder with 6 Comments

I live in the Midwest and enjoy feeding the birds. I feed sunflower seeds, suet cakes, thistle, and sugar water. I also have a bird bath. I get a nice variety of cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and even an occasional duck — but is there something could offer to bring in rarer birds? Like Orioles? Bluebirds? Doves? More? I live near a creek, greenway and several large, heavily wooded parks.
Thanks — all your answers are great; I’ll give them a try. Unfortunately, I can’t leave a thumbs up — "Pollice verso" — for all of you as a "Level 1," but if I could, I would.

Storing Wild Bird Seeds

***This video was recorded before the Blizzard,, you will see that there is no snow. We have plenty of snow now thou.*** YAY!! We had lots of problems with mice, moles etc,, getting into the wild-bird seed bags in our Shed. We bought large plastic containers which the mice were able to chew thru. Hubby built a large wooden container to hold #150 seeds. We also use old Popcorn cans from the Holidays to store seeds. Mice can chew thru wood.. we have had the wooden container for many years now and the mice have not chewed thru it,, if they do Hubby will replace the wood. The plastic containers are useless. Happy Birding!! I will be making a video in a few weeks on how to make Homemade Soft Suet. Artist: PCR Song: Wooden

I live in New England and usually have birds at feeders all year. Suddenly, there are none. Why?

I have three feeders. One with mixed feed for all. One suet for woodpeckers (they are coming), and one with thistle for the smaller birds (usually, there is a feeding frenzy here).
