So my sunflowers have been going real strong for months. The hairs are coming out for bloom, but the head has yet to develop.
The stalks are sturdy as can be. They survived many storms.
One day I left and one of the stalks was broken right in the middle of the plant. I don’t see how it happened because it was so sturdy all across the rest of the plant.
The next day I left again and came back to find another one broken at the bottom. Stalk is wicked strong, still don’t see how it broke.
The sunflowers next to it are the same, and I would have to put considerable pressure on the stem to break it.
They get top heavy but they haven’t even began to bloom quite yet.
I have a deer fence around them.
My mom was home both times I left. I don’t know if she would have done it or not.
A small lizard lives around there, but I don’t think his weight alone would have caused them to drop if he climbed up them.
Another storm just passed, and the rest of the smaller sunflowers are fine.
Funny how they both broke when I was gone for a short period of time away from them.
What do you guys think happened?
Anyone have their sunflowers break like that, PRE-BLOOM?
Last year nothing happened to them, and the year before my mom "accidentally" dropped a bird feeder on some young ones and they died
