Really,Really simple suet cake recipes and help beyond this too!

Posted by Filed Under Bird Suet Feeder, Featured with 1 Comment

I would like some really, really simple ways to make some suet cakes for feed my wild birds in my bird suet feeder.

I found a few recipes, but, I also have some other questions regarding this as well.  Can I put in uncooked rice or pasta in the bird mix?

Can I use Crisco instead of going to the butchers to get the beef tallow?

What other interesting things can I put into my bird suet cakes?

What do people do to store them…as in where can I put the created “cakes”, after I have let the stuff cool down?  And what do I pour them into?

Should I put them into the fridge or let them sit out in the kitchen or freeze them (I need to get them solid for my bird suet feeder, that’s why I ask)?

Thanks!

Sign me as a happy bird feeder and watcher!

All You Need To Know About Your Bird Suet Feeder

Posted by Filed Under Bird Suet Feeder, Featured with No Comments

Suet is a great bird feed. It has a high fat content so contains a huge amount of energy that will help keep your birds warm and healthy – especially during the cold winter months.

It is also a great feed during the spring months when birds are highly active with migration, mating and nest building.  The extra energy from suet can really help them and their chicks.

And, of course, the benefit to us as bird lovers is that a bird suet feeder will attract a lot of birds that we get to enjoy watching.  The type of birds that a suet bird feeder will attract is a very long list – here are some you can expect (dependent on where you live):- Jays, Starlings, Woodpeckers, Chackadees, Blackbirds and some types of Finches.

You have two choices for suet.  You can purchase it (it is inexpensive) in “cake” form or you can make it yourself from beef fat.

You can also add bifferent types of bird seed to the suet to add to the nutrients you are feeding your birds.

As for the actual bird suet feeder, there are many choices.  You can purchase a ready made feeder or make your own – such as hanging a small log with holes drilled into it to hold the feed.  You can also put suet into natural places in your garden such as speading it onto tree branches.

You can also use common household items to hold the suet feed.  Try using some taco shells you have to load with feed and place in an accessible place in the garden.  The birds will love it!

And as for maintenance:- becuase suet will go bad, it should be changed regulary and kept in a shady place during the hot summer months.  You should also clean your bird suet feeder at regular intervals.

You may find that it actually attracts too many of the wrong sorts of birds such as starlings.  If this happens you can reduce the amount of seed that you put in the suet cakes or use an upsidedown feeder so only certian types of birds can feed.

Suet is a great feed that will attract lots of different species of birds and does not need to be covered from the elements (like seed) – so it is a excellent choice of you want to watch different species throughout the year.
