Adventures in Saponification – Part I: Rendering the Fat

March 29, 2010 Bird Suet Feeder

In this first installment, I explain how render beef suet into tallow. This is one of the primary ingredients in most soaps, even in commercial brands. If you look on the label and see “sodium tallowate,” your soap has been made with cow fat. You can use strictly vegetable oils in your soap, but it is hard to recreate the same firmness effects (cheaply, anyway) that tallow has. You can also use tallow to make a bird feeder cube by melting it down again, adding seeds, and letting it cool in a cube. Hand it out and the birds will love it. Tallow was also used in cooking back in the olden days. In fact, the first fast food restaurants fried french fries in it!

I’m in the middle of rendering my first batch of Tallow as I type this. OMG.. I wish I’d seen this video a few hours ago. Thank you so much for this video! It’s awesome. The step by step, no nonsense presentation is great (I hate when folks ramble on and on.. Just get to the point already) Again Thank you… Awesome Job!

Question for you.. How much Suet did you use.. and how much Tallow did the batch end up rendering? Trying to get a feel for how much Tallow results per lb of Suet

Well, I had eight pounds of pure suet and ended up with roughly six? I should have actually weighed it afterwords, but I didn’t think of it. Next time I render, I will post the before and after ratios on the side panel of this video. Good luck, and I am glad that you like the video!

Chemically it is changed by saponification and quite safe. In fact, it is far better for you than industrial soap. My second installment will be put up soon.

Ok dude… by watching this.. you are going to make me go vegan now.. yuck! carcass on your hands. Sick meat products that are everywhere.

People have been making soap for thousands of years and eating meat since before even then. It is natural to man so long as it is done with temperance and prudence.
